BRIEF ACCOUNT OF DEPARTMENT

The business department is one of the school’s most popular and forward thinking department with rich academic heritage stretching back 17 years, and an existing agenda for the future.

The department initially used to engage in interdisciplinary business studies in many subject areas such as Accounting and Secretarial options. Currently, the core business programs run by the department are in accounting and management studies.

The department, which started with only 44 students, can now boast of between 120 and 130 students and an able teaching staff of 11.

The department is proud of its excellent reputation in academics. Whichever business course you choose, you will be taught by leading and seasoned masters in their field, and receive comprehensive, up-to-date tuition that society regards highly.

SUBJECT COMBINATIONS
Core Subjects
Core Mathematics, Integrated Science, English Language, and Social Studies. All students together with other selected elective subjects take these.

Elective Subjects
Together with core subjects, the following elective subject’s groupings are available.

Students Population

Students placed in ‘B1’ class take elective mathematics as an alternative to cost accounting, which is given to all students in B2 and B3. A section of students in 4B3 takes typewriting as an alternative to cost accounting. They are currently 116 students.

FACILITIES IN THE DEPARTMENT
The facilities available to the department are only the classrooms and 20 typewriters.

ACHIEVEMENTS OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS
The academic performance of the students has tremendously increased over the past five years. Apart from obtaining 100% passes in almost all the elective subjects, the department is capable of producing quality passes. For this reason our Business student are dominating in the public tertiary institutions.

In recognition of this excellent achievement, the department was awarded prizes during the last two speeches and prize-giving day.The department was also among the selected ones in Ashanti Region in the Prime Time in 2009 and won a prize.The department has been able to form the Ghana Association of Business Students to link the student’s practical business activities.

The following table shows the performance of run students over the past five years. Failure rate was highly negligible.

PROBLEMS/ CHALLENGES OF THE DEPARTMENT:
The performance of the department is in ascendency yet it is not devoid of challenges. Few of these are as listed below;

1. The department has no office to keep modern business equipment, which will facilitate business studies.
2. The size of the school library does not promote business studies.
3. Teachers are found with large class size, which poses difficulty in making of class exercises, examination scripts, and class management.

VISION
Business has become the main hallmark in our contemporally world economy with women dominating in most business activities.
It is therefore our major goal as a department to train and inculcate in our students the relevant business entrepreneurial skills and knowledge to help them become women of substance as well as good elements for family and nation building.

To this end, it is our ambition to offer our students quality tuition and groom them for presidential award by making excellent grades (“A1”) in all the subjects.
Finally, the focus of the department is to give students a thorough grounding in the knowledge and skills they need to succeed as professionals in their future career.

GOODWILL MASSAGES
It is with a great sense of joy and honor that I send these messages to Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ Senior High School on this 50th Anniversary celebration. On behalf of the students and teachers of the Business Department, I extend our facilitations for this great achievement.

Being engaged in educating the Girl-Child for the past fifty years is no mean endeavor. No doubt, it has been a period of pain, sweat, and sacrifice and we are thankful to the Lord who has blessed our entire endeavor.

With the immense contributions to the growth of education over the years and its positive impart in the nation building, it is our prayer that we will not relent on our efforts but will seek to work together with students and teachers to raise higher the academic excellence and the status of women in our society.
Nonetheless, this Golden Anniversary reminds of all the honorable achievements by all and sundry.

We say “Ayeko”, well done. Long live Yaa Asantewaa Senior High, long live Ashanti kingdom and long live Ghana.
